Introducing AI claim charts with experts in the loop

Introducing AI claim charts by iLumos, shown with an illustration of a claim chart

Claim charts take more time and team bandwidth than almost any other step between a promising patent and a filed case. AI has sped up drafting, but for many patent teams it has created a new bottleneck: a growing stack of AI claim charts that someone still has to check, element by element, before anyone can rely on them.

Today we’re launching Claim Charting in iLumOS to clear that stack. iLumOS turns a patent number into a fully cited AI claim chart in minutes, and a Lumenci expert is available on demand to validate it whenever a filing, a funding decision or a licensing demand depends on it. You get the speed of AI without giving up accuracy, and your team spends its time making decisions instead of reviewing charts.

Key takeaways

  1. Claim Charting is live in iLumOS alongside Portfolio Analysis.

  2. Every element in an iLumOS AI claim chart is cited and rated Strong, Partial, Weak or No Evidence, so a chart never reads stronger than its proof.

  3. Lumenci experts, who have delivered 3,200+ expert-built claim charts across 100,000+ patents for matters that produced $3.5B+ in verdicts and settlements, can review any chart before it is used.

Why do good patents stall at the claim chart stage?

Claim charts are where great portfolios stall. They are the slowest and most expensive step between spotting a promising patent and acting on it, so the work often stops before the chart is built.

Many potentially valuable patents have gone unexplored because infringement analysis and claim charting cost too much, IAM reported in October 2026. Meanwhile the volume of charting work keeps growing. More than 37% of U.S. patent cases filed in Q1 2026 went to the Eastern District of Texas, and NPEs filed 53.2% of all district court cases, according to Unified Patents. That court's Patent Rule 3-1(c) requires a chart identifying where each element of each asserted claim is found in each accused instrumentality. With PTAB institution tightening in 2026, more of these disputes now stay in district court, where the contentions chart carries the case, as Lumenci’s guide to infringement contentions in 2026 explains.

Funders feel it at portfolio scale. Westfleet Advisors' 2025 report puts patent matters at 27% of $2.8 billion in new commitments, mostly through portfolio deals, where every asserted patent needs its own chart. Finding a weak element late is expensive: in AIPLA's 2025 Economic Survey, a case with $1 million to $10 million at risk has a median cost of $600,000 through claim construction, as summarized by IPWatchdog.

How are iLumOS AI claim charts different from other claim chart tools?

Most AI claim chart tools compete on speed. Ours was built by IP experts, people who have charted patents for litigation and licensing, rather than by general software teams, so the output reads like work product counsel can use. We built it to be judged the way a senior litigator judges a chart: by whether each element holds up when opposing counsel goes looking for the gap.

Element-by-element claim mapping built on one infringement theory

Claim Charting runs on a team of specialist AI agents, each owning one part of the evidence-of-use work an analyst does. If you don't have a target yet, it identifies and ranks candidate accused products. It selects the strongest independent claim, or charts the one you choose. Every element is argued from one consistent theory of infringement, so the chart reads as a single argument rather than a stack of loose matches.

Evidence strength ratings that show every gap before opposing counsel does

Each element carries a rating of Strong, Partial, Weak or No Evidence, and No Evidence is never folded into Weak. Elements that carry the novelty of the patent are flagged, because those are usually the ones the case turns on. Anything rated below Strong comes with a recommended next step, such as a document to request or a test to run. An overall read-strength score tells you at a glance whether the chart is ready for counsel or needs more work.

Cited, screenshotted and archived evidence for every claim element

Every element links to a quote, a source and a screenshot. Each source page is archived with a date, so the exhibit still exists if the product page changes after you cite it. Sources from outside the U.S. are flagged, and material published by the patent owner is marked, since it cannot prove what someone else's product does. The finished chart exports to Word with an infringement summary, element-by-element mapping and a full exhibit index.

How reliable are AI claim charts, and where do Lumenci experts come in?

AI claim charts are reliable when every line can be checked and a qualified person has checked the lines that matter. iLumOS gives you the first. Lumenci experts provide the second.

The checking matters. Damien Charlotin's database had logged 1,058 U.S. cases of improper generative AI use in court filings by June 2026, as reported by the UNC Law Library. Model quality also varies from one answer to the next. Lumenci CEO Harish Daiya told IAM that even with tuning, "sometimes the answers are 90% accurate and sometimes 60%." When a chart decides where a client commits its budget, an expert has to close that gap. Read the full IAM article.

That is what expert in the loop means in iLumOS. You order Lumenci expert review per matter. An analyst checks claim selection, element mapping and evidence, and the chart leaves your team only after that sign-off. Routine triage stays fast, and the charts headed to a court, a funder or a licensee get human judgment. Lumenci's team has delivered 3,200+ expert-built claim charts across 100,000+ patents, supporting client matters that produced $3.5B+ in verdicts and settlements, and IAM named Lumenci in its Strategy 300 Global Leaders for 2026.

Every chart also carries a standing notice to verify sources and reasoning before legal use. Counsel stays responsible for what is filed or served.

A connected patent workflow, starting with portfolio analysis and claim charting

iLumOS takes a patent from portfolio analysis to a cited claim chart on the same platform, and Claim Charting also works on its own when you already know the patent you want to chart.

Many patent analytics tools stop once they've scored a portfolio. They show which patents look valuable, and then proving it moves somewhere else: a spreadsheet, a vendor, another platform. In iLumOS, the next step sits on the same patent record. A team that has narrowed a portfolio to its strongest assets, or a funder sorting a portfolio deal, can open Claim Charting from any flagged patent with one click and see whether the infringement read holds up. The analysis and the evidence stay together.

Plenty of work starts with a single patent instead of a portfolio. A litigator may have a client's patent and a suspected product. A funder may be checking the one patent at the center of a funding request. A corporate IP team may be weighing a patent acquisition. In each case, enter the patent number and start charting. You don't need to run Portfolio Analysis first.

IP Law Firms

Whoever builds your charts, associates, technical experts or an outside vendor, still owns the final work. With iLumOS, each chart starts from an AI draft where every element already has a quote, a source and a screenshot, and the weak elements are flagged. That frees time for the work only your people can do: tightening the infringement theory, pressure-testing claim construction and preparing infringement contentions. The same hours now cover more candidate patents, and Lumenci experts add review capacity without adding headcount.

Litigation funders

Your diligence process stays the same. What changes is how much of a portfolio you can see before engaging outside experts. iLumOS gives your team an independent first read across every patent in a deal, so expert spend goes to the assets that warrant it rather than being spread across the whole list.

Corporate IP teams

Your team knows the portfolio and the products. iLumOS gives you evidence-backed starting points for licensing outreach without sending every patent to outside counsel at hourly rates, a cost large companies have been reluctant to carry, as IAM reported. When an assertion arrives, your team gets its own read of the asserted patent against your product before the first call with counsel.

Your patent data stays confidential and isn't used to train public AI models

You own everything you submit and every output generated for you, and iLumOS does not use your content to train public foundation models without your written consent. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, access runs through role-based controls, multi-factor authentication and single sign-on, and AI processing is logged for audit. Each organization works in its own workspace, and Lumenci staff see your content only for support or when you order expert review. Details are in the Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.
